The 500th jubilee of reformation was committed for 2017.
The 95 Theses against the so-called indulgences of the Catholic Church were nailed to the church door of the Castle Church of Wittenberg by Martin Luther on the 31th of October in 1517. This moment is seen as the birth of the reformation and the propagation of the Evangelical religion.
The Luther year 2017 was initiated by the so-called Luther Decade.
Each year, since 2008, new topics and created complexes of Luther and also the evolution of the history of the Reformation with events, exhibitions and research projects were closer to interest. The motto of 2016 was “Reformation and a world”, in 2017 the jubilee was celebrated worldwide as “500 years of Reformation” with religious and cultural events, conferences and exhibitions – particularly at places in Saxony-Anhalt.

The places of work and homes of Martin Luther are just a stone throw away from our hotel in Merseburg. The workplace of the biggest opponent of Luther, Cardinal Albrecht, located in Halle, is only 15 minutes away by car from our hotel. In 1545, Luther himself preached in Mersebuger Dom. On the 4th of August, he gave a worship ceremony speech at the marriage of the Dean Sigismund von Lindenau. Martin Luther has visited Merseburg three times and left his traces there.

Our Tip: The Luther Way
Guided tours on the so-called Luther Way are highly recommended. Here you can visit familiar places and places where Martin Luther was settled on a distance of 410 kilometers, and trace the history of the reformation in authentic places. The Luther way has a connection to the famous way of St. James, that has also many events to offer, when you start in the Autumn and arrive in the Lutherstadt Wittenberg on the 31th of October. The southern Luther route passes close to Merseburg and the little remote Halle an der Saale in a westerly direction.
Many of our guests took part at the German Protestant Convention (Kirchentag) in May 2017. There have been several conventions in Berlin, in Wittenberg and in different cities in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt to celebrate the Reformation Quincentenary 2017.
